(Democratic) presidential scandals

Regrettably, it’s a truism that Republicans hate Obama. But does anyone think that intense animosity that Republicans bear for Democrats is new? Certainly not anyone who remembers the impeachment proceedings against Bill Clinton.

Writing during the presidential primaries in January, 2008, Paul Krugman looked back at the aftermath of Clinton’s election in 1992. He noted that “bitter partisanship” had plagued Clinton’s administration from the beginning.  Any hope for national unity was shattered, he wrote. “From Day 1 they faced an all-out assault from conservatives determined to use any means at hand to discredit a Democratic president.” Sound familiar?

Krugman was amazingly prescient about the future, writing

Any Democrat who makes it to the White House can expect the same treatment: an unending procession of wild charges and fake scandals, dutifully given credence by major media organizations.

How did the rest of us not see this coming?
